NIST (Commerce Dep’t) issues final sets of guidance on AI risk, security, and standards
On July 26, 2024, the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) published three sets of final guidance in connection with President Biden’s October 2023 Executive Order on AI: (1) an AI risk management framework, generative AI profile (NIST AI 600-1), (2) secure software development practices for generative AI and dual-use foundation models (NIST SP 800-218A), and (3) a plan for global engagement on AI standards (NIST AI 100-5).
Each of these guidance documents is geared toward helping industry participants—particularly those working with emerging technologies such as digital assets and blockchain—identify, assess, and mitigate AI-related risks while fostering innovation and global collaboration. Effective immediately, this final guidance underscores the administration’s commitment to strengthening AI governance and security, clarifying recommended best practices that organizations are encouraged to integrate into their existing technology and compliance frameworks.
